Lesson #64: Always have a spare key

About a year ago I lost my car key. The conclusion I came to how I lost it was I left it in the door of my car and some playful youths took it. That was after doing a comprehensive search and wracking my brain.

Disaster was averted thanks to a friend giving me a lift home where I picked up my spare car key. Since then I’ve had one car key and been extra careful with it.

Until last night. I went to the beach for a last minute run with Esse, my puppy. And after a quick dip in the ocean and dishevelled run back to the car I went to get out my key only to find I didn’t have it. Darkness was starting to fall as I raced back to the beach hoping to stumble upon my precious key.

Like looking for a needle in a haystack

Three hours of pacing, in pitch black dark, with my puppy and later, thankfully, my son and sister, all the while desperately hoping to find the key. Eventually, completely exhausted and despairing, I had to admit defeat. It might have been swept into the ocean since I was running along the edge of the tide.

And now, with heavy heart, as I accept the generous offer of my sister to drive me to and from my first day at my new job, I have made the arrangements for a locksmith to do the (expensive) job of cutting a new key (plus a spare) .. and it’s a big lesson learned.

Always have a spare key.

Now, time to get up and get ready for a day of induction.

Amen.
